Samarth Ramdas was born in Narayan Suryajipanta Thosar, c. 1608, Jamb, Jalna district, Maharashtra, India. According to mythology, Narayan ran away from his wedding ceremony after hearing a pundit scream the term 'Saavdhan!' (Warning!) During a traditional Hindu wedding rite. He is said to have walked to Panchavati, a Hindu holy village near Nashik, when he was twelve years old. He then relocated to Taakli, which is located near Nashik. He spent the following twelve years at Taakli as an ascetic in total devotion to Rama, most likely between 1621 and 1633. He followed a strict daily schedule at this time, devoting most of his time to meditation, devotion, and exercise. At the age of 24, he is said to have reached enlightenment. Around this time, he changed his name to Ramdas.

At 1681, Ramdas died in Sajjangad. He hadn't eaten or drunk anything for the previous five days. Prayopaveshana is the name given to the practice of fasting till death. While resting beside a Rama idol brought from Tanjore, he repeated the taraka mantra "Shriram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram" During this time, his students Uddhav Swami and Akka Swami stayed in his service.
