His father, Haji Muhammad Yasin, was a renowned Islamic teacher and preacher. While his mother, Haji Sati Amina, taught him the basics of Islam and the Arabic language. Starting formal education at the age of six, he attended a local Islamic primary school and continued his studies at the Babakan Siwaringin Islamic Boarding School, founded by his father in 1952. There, he studied extensively on various Islamic subjects including the Quran, Hadith, and Fiqh.
