Early Life: - White was born in the English hamlet of Pelton, County Durham. His father worked as a clerk, a shopkeeper, a lorry and bus driver, and he also performed the piano in local bars. His grandpa was a pianist, and his uncle drummed in local dance bands. He attended a technical school before moving to the neighbouring town of Ferryhill at the age of seven, where he spent the rest of his youth. White began taking piano lessons at the age of six, playing the instrument "very percussively," which his uncle noted and reported to his parents, who purchased him an Ajax drum set for Christmas when he was twelve. The trio became well-known in the Newcastle region, performing as many as seven nights a week till late at working men's clubs and dance halls. White's professors learned about his activities only after the band was highlighted in the local media. White also had a paper round throughout his tenure with the band. In 1964, the Downbeats changed their name to the Blue Chips and travelled to London to compete in an amateur band contest hosted by Melody Maker at the London Palladium.
