Her ancestors were from Devon, and her great-uncle was the Whig politician Sir Matthew Wood, 1st Baronet, from whom the Page Wood baronetcies descended. Her father was an Englishman who resided in Dublin and graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a medical degree. Her mother was an Irish Catholic from a lower-income household.
