Early Career: - Mary Roy, a Malayali Jacobite Syrian Christian women's rights campaigner from Kerala, and Rajib Roy, a Bengali Hindu tea plantation manager from Calcutta, gave birth to Arundhati Roy in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. Her parents split when she was two, and she moved back to Kerala with her mother and brother. The family spent some time at Ooty, Tamil Nadu, with Roy's maternal grandparents. When she was five years old, her family relocated to Kerala, where her mother established a school. Roy attended Corpus Christi School in Kottayam before moving on to the Lawrence School in Lovedale, Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu. She subsequently went on to study architecture at Delhi's School of Planning and Architecture, where she met architect Gerard da, Cunha. They married in 1978 and lived in Delhi together.
Career: - Roy began her career in television and cinema. She penned the screenplays for In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989), a film based on her experiences as an architecture student in which she also performed, and Electric Moon (1991). (1992). During their marriage, her husband, Pradip Krishen, directed both. In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones received Roy the National Film Award for Best Screenplay in 1988. She gained prominence in 1994 after criticizing Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen, which was based on the story of Phoolan Devi. She questioned the right to "restage the rape of a real lady without her permission" in her film review titled "The Great Indian Rape Trick," and accused.
