Mary Roy was a Malayali Jacobite Syrian Christian women's rights activist from Kerala and Rajib Roy was a Bengali Hindu tea plantation manager from Calcutta. She moved back to Kerala with her mother and brother when she was two years old as a result of her parent's divorce. She is an Indian author best known for her book The God of Small Things, which became the greatest-selling book by an Indian author who did not emigrate and received the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997. She is a political activist who supports environmental and human rights causes. Roy was a film and television actor. She played the lead in 1985's Massey Sahib.

She created the screenplays for Electric Moon and the movie In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones, which was based on her experiences as an architectural student and in which she also performed.
