Barbara Mae Cameron was an American writer, poet, photographer, and advocate for human rights. She was born on May 22, 1954, in the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. In 1975, Randy Burns, a Northern Paiute, and Cameron co-founded the Gay American Indians. Cameron was the co-chair of Lesbian Agenda for Action and vice president of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club in the late 1980s. Cameron was Community United Against Violence's executive director from 1989 to 1992, supporting victims of hate crimes and domestic violence. She was the Institute on Native American Health and Wellness's founder. On May 22, 2023, Cameron was featured in a Google Doodle.
