Early Life: - Bismillah Khan was born on March 21, 1916, in the town of Dumraon, British India, to a family of traditional Muslim musicians, as the second son of Paigambar Bux Khan and Mitthanbai. His father worked as a court musician for Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon Estate in Bihar. Ustad Salar Hussain Khan and Rasool Bux Khan, his two grandfathers, were also musicians at the Dumraon palace. At birth, he was given the name Qamruddin to rhyme with his elder brother's name Shamsuddin. When his grandfather Rasool Baksh Khan, himself a shehnai musician, saw the newborn, he is reported to have cried "Bismillah," or "In the name of Allah," and he was afterward known by this name.
Professional Career: - Khan was a devout Muslim who participated in Hindu and Muslim ceremonies and was seen as a model of interfaith harmony. His fame was such that he was picked to perform in Delhi's iconic Red Fort when the Indian flag was unfurled at the hour of India's independence on August 15, 1947; his music was shown on television every Independence Day. Prior to 1966, when the Indian government pressed him to sing at the Edinburgh International Festival, he declined requests to perform in other countries.
