Early Life: - Colin was born on June 1, 1944, in Stratford-upon-Avon, the only child of Beryl Blakemore (formerly Smith) and Norman Blakemore. At the time, Beryl was a member of the British Women's Army during the war and belonged to the Royal Air Force of Norman. When Colin was five, his father became a television repair engineer.

Colin received a government scholarship from Corpus Christi College in Cambridge, earned an honors degree in medicine in 1965, and received her master's degree in 1969. Blakemore earned his Ph.D. in Physiological Optics in 1968 as a Harkness Fellow from the University of California, Berkeley. There he worked with Horace Barlow.

Career: From 1968 to 1979, Colin was a Physiology Demonstrator and Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and Medical Director at Downing University. From 1976 to 1979, he was a holder of the Royal Society's Rock Research Fellowship. He was appointed Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow at Magdalen College in 1979 at the age of 35. From the same university, he earned an advanced DSc degree in 1989.

He was Director of the James S McDonnell University of Oxford, Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), Academy of Medicine (FMedSci), Academia Europe and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Europe, and Emeritus Fellow of the Royal Society of Medical Sciences (HonFRCP).
