Yesilgöz started her political career as a board member of the Socialist Party, serving on the Amersfoort branch's board. She served in the Amsterdam city council from 2014 until 2017. In the general election of 2017, Yesilgoz-Zegerius was chosen to serve in the House of Representatives.
Yesilgoz, together with Mona Keijzer, was named State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy in the third Rutte government, which was announced on May 25, 2021. She was named Minister of Justice and Security in the Rutte government on January 10, 2022. She was formally appointed as the VVD's party leader on August 14.
