He was employed by McKinsey & Company in 1986 to work at the organization's Toronto branch. Under the leadership of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Barton served on the Canadian Advisory Committee on the Public Service. Beginning in 2017, Barton presided over the Advisory Council on Economic Growth, a prestigious committee of the Canadian federal government. The council presented 13 suggestions.
