Early Life: - Stephens attended Michigan State from 1989 through 1993, where he was coached by Spartan icon Jud Heathcote. He was a four-year letter winner for the Spartans and was named to Basketball Weekly's Freshman All-America Team as a third-team selection. He averaged 11.2 points and five rebounds as a junior. He was a co-captain for the Spartans his senior year, averaging 9.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He was chosen to Basketball Weekly's All-Midwest Honorable Mention Team. In Europe, he played three professional seasons.
Professional Career: - Stephens began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Oakland for two seasons from 1997 to 1999. He subsequently joined former Tom Izzo assistant Tom Crean at Marquette, where he and Marquette star Dwyane Wade reached the Final Four in 2003. In 2003, Stephens became an assistant coach for his alma university, Michigan State, and its Hall of Fame head coach, Tom Izzo. In 2012, he was named associate head coach.
