On August 24, 2019, three Aurora Police officers approached McClain after responding to a citizen complaint about an unarmed guy wearing a "sketchy" ski mask. Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema, the three cops engaged in the event, all stated that their body cams were pulled off during a battle with McClain. 

McClain was forced to the ground with his wrists shackled behind his back, and Woodyard then choked him twice. Upon arrival, paramedics Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec sedated McClain with ketamine, which was later judged to be in excess of a therapeutic amount. The violent incident that resulted in his death involved three police officers and two paramedics.

Sheneen McClain, McClain's mother, relocated her family of six from Denver to Aurora to flee gang violence. She stated that Elijah was home-schooled and that she saw him as "intellectually gifted, but fiercely independent" from a young age. He trained himself to play the violin and guitar while he was still a teenager. During his lunch breaks, he would bring his instruments to animal shelters and play for the abandoned animals, believing that music would make them feel better. During the conversation, the caller stated that he did not believe the guy was armed and that no one was in immediate danger. McClain friends questioned after the event felt that the arm flailing was most likely simply dancing, given he was listening to music at the time of the call. McClain was dressed warmly and wore a ski mask since he suffered from a blood circulation issue that led him to easily cold.

During the confrontation, the body cameras were separated from the police officers' clothes, but the audio can still be heard.
