He spent eight seasons as a player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Montross was an All-American as a junior and senior, and he was a member of the UNC squad that defeated Michigan to win the NCAA Championship in 1993.
In the 1994 NBA Draft, Montross was chosen with the ninth overall choice by the Boston Celtics. Montross and Jackson were dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers on the day of the 1997 NBA Draft. Due to a foot ailment, Montross declared his retirement on August 26, 2003, and the Raptors dismissed him in February 2004.
