Before turning pro and coaching in Germany, Spoelstra played collegiate basketball for the Portland Pilots. He received the West Coast Conference (WCC) Freshman of the Year award in 1989. He worked as a player-assistant coach with TuS Herten, a German basketball club with its headquarters in Westphalia, for two years (1993–1955) in the Basketball Bundesliga's second level. In 1995, Spoelstra was appointed the Heat's video coordinator. When the Miami Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals of 2006, Spoelstra won his first title in the NBA while serving as an assistant coach. In December 2011, Spoelstra received a $6 million contract extension that ran through the 2013–14 NBA season.
When the Heat had the best record in the Eastern Conference at the time of selection, Spoelstra was chosen to serve as the head coach of the 2013 Eastern Conference All-Stars in the 2013 NBA All-Star Game. When the Miami Heat defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 90-85 on December 16, 2017, Spoelstra earned his 455th victory as the team's head coach, passing Riley to become the coach with the most victories in the team's history. As the Heat's head coach, Spoelstra recorded his 600th victory on April 28, 2021, making him the sixth head coach in NBA history to amass 600 victories with a single squad.
