He served as the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference's previous president. Since 1982, he has held the position of Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on many occasions. From 2009 to 2014, he also served as the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy. He is the father of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the son of Sheikh Abdullah, the state's first elected chief minister.

Abdullah became the first prominent politician to be imprisoned under the Public Safety Act on September 16, 2019. Farooq Abdullah appeared before the Supreme Court of India in connection with the Article 370 hearing after his son Omar Abdullah.
