In 1993, he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Florida International University. He worked as a bouncer at a local nightclub as one of his two jobs while attending FIU. He chose to become a full-time basketball coach in 1992 after being subjected to gunshots while on duty by a group of individuals he had expelled for fighting.

Professional Career: - From 2000 to 2004, Martin worked as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Northeastern University.
