Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami receives Arjuna Award from the President of India

President Droupadi Murmu of India honored Mohammed Shami, a fast bowler, with the Arjuna Award on January 9, 2024. Despite missing a few games, Shami was especially outstanding in the ODI World Cup 2023, topping the tournament with wickets taken.

After the Khel Ratna Award, the Arjuna Award is the second-highest athletic honor in India. Shami and long jumper M Sreeshankar were among the 26 athletes to receive honors from President Murmu. The Board of Control for Cricket in India suggested Shami's name following his incredible performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Shami, who took 24 wickets in just 7 games, concluded the 2023 World Cup as the top bowler participating. "This award is a dream, life passes and people are not able to win this award.

I am happy that I have been nominated for this award". Before the presentation, Shami had expressed his happiness at being nominated for the prize.

The starting lineup for the first four World Cup 2023 matches did not include Mohammed Shami. After Hardik Pandya sustained a severe ankle injury over Bangladesh on October 19, Shami was added to the starting XI.

After his return, Shami made a swift impact on the competition for the Indian team, taking five wickets against New Zealand. From then on, the pacer set a record.

With 24 wickets in the event, Shami outscored Jasprit Bumrah, a prominent bowler from India.

26 athletes in all won the Arjuna Award in 2023 in recognition of their extraordinary feats. The athletes from the 2023 Asian Games led the list. India did better than expected in the tournament, setting a new record with 107 medals won.

The astounding feat broke India's previous record-breaking total of 70 medals from the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

The 2023 Hangzhou Games have surpassed that accomplishment in terms of both quantity and quality, despite the fact that it was lauded for the 16 gold medals it included.

India reached unprecedented heights on the competition's last day, winning an incredible twelve medals. Six gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze medals were among them.

India's score surpassed 100 for the first time in the competition's history thanks to this.
