Early Career: - Jagjivan Ram was born into the Chamar caste of the Indian Caste System at Chandwa, near Arrah, Bihar. He has three sisters and an older brother named Sant Lal. Sobhi Ram's father, Sobhi Ram, served in the British Indian Army and was stationed in Peshawar before resigning and settling in his native hamlet of Chandwa. He also became a Mahant of the Shiv Narayani sect, and his proficiency in calligraphy allowed him to draw several volumes for the religion that were distributed locally. At January 1914, Jagjivan was enrolled in a local school. Jagjivan and his mother Vasanti Devi were left in a difficult financial condition following his father's untimely demise.
