Early Career: - Jamshedji Tata was born on March 3, 1839, in Navsari, Gujarat, to Nusserwanji and Jeevanbai Tata. His family was a member of the minority community of Zoroastrians, or Parsees, who fled to India from the persecution of Zoroastrians in Iran. He was born into a devout but impoverished family of priests. Nusserwanji, his father, was the first businessman in a line of Parsi Zoroastrian priests. Gujarati was his mother tongue. He defied his family's priestly heritage by becoming the family's first business owner. In Mumbai, he established an export trade enterprise.
Professional Career: - Tata worked at his father's business till he was 29 years old. In 1868, he established a trade corporation with a capital of $21,000 (about $52 million in 2015 dollars). In 1869, he purchased a bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli and transformed it into a cotton mill, which he called Alexandra Mill. He profitably sold the mill two years later. Later, in 1874, Jamsetji Tata established the Central India Spinning, Weaving, and Manufacturing Company in Nagpur because it looked like a good area for him to start another firm. Because of this unusual location, the people of Bombay mocked Tata for not making the wise decision of establishing the cotton company in Bombay, dubbed as India's Cottonopolis.
His Net Worth is not known.
Tata fell gravely unwell while on a business trip to Germany in 1900. He died on May 19, 1904, at Bad Nauheim, and was buried in the Parsi burial area in Brookwood Cemetery in Woking, England.
