Donne died on March 31, 1631, and was buried in old St Paul's Cathedral, where a monument statue of him by Nicholas Stone was constructed, complete with a Latin epitaph most likely written by himself. The memorial survived the Great Fire of London in 1666 and is presently housed at St Paul's Cathedral. According to Izaac Walton's biography, the statue was modelled after Donne's life in order to depict his presence at the resurrection; it was to establish a fad in similar memorials throughout the 17th century. John Donne Early Life/Career

Early Life: - Donne was born in London in 1571 or 1572 to a recusant Roman Catholic household during a period when practicing that faith was outlawed in England. Donne was the third child in a family of six. His father, also called John Donne, was a warden of the Ironmongers Company in the City of London and married to Elizabeth Heywood. He did, however, shun unwanted government attention for fear of prosecution.

Professional Career: - In 1602 John Donne was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Brackley seat, however, the job was unpaid. Queen Elizabeth, I died in 1603, and King James VI of Scotland succeeded her as King James I of England. The period's fashion for coterie poetry provided Donne with a means to seek patronage, and many of his poems were written for wealthy friends or patrons, particularly MP Sir Robert Drury of Hawsted, whom he met in 1610 and who became his main patron, furnishing him and his family with an apartment in his large house in Drury Lane.

In 1610 and 1611, Donne composed two anti-Catholic polemics for Morton: Pseudo-Martyr and Ignatius His Conclave. He later authored two Anniversaries for Drury, An Anatomy of the World (1611) and Of the Progress of the Soul (1612).

Donne sat as an MP again in the Addled Parliament of 1614, this time representing Taunton, although while receiving five appointments within its business, he made no recorded speech. Despite being impressed with Donne's efforts, King James refused to restore him at court and instead encouraged him to assume holy orders. Finally, Donne yielded to the king's requests and was consecrated a priest in the Church of England in 1615.
