His family settled in Snellville, Georgia, where Okogie began playing basketball for Shiloh High School. He played college basketball at Georgia Tech and was selected 20th overall in the 2018 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was a third-team 2017–18 All-ACC selection as a sophomore. As a sophomore, Okogie led Georgia Tech in scoring with 18.2 points per game. After the season he declared for the 2018 NBA Draft but did not hire an agent, thus leaving open the possibility of returning to school.
When Josh Okogie signed with the Phoenix Suns last summer, the franchise landscape was much different. The team was in the process of strengthening a roster that had won 64 games the season before. Monty Williams was waxing philosophical, the team's second-best player was 37-year-old Chris Paul, and the team needed a defensive-minded player to complement the offensive ideology of the coaching staff.
