Judith Leyster Biography- Early Life/Career

Early Life and Career: - Judith Leyster was born in Haarlem, the eighth child of local brewer Jan Willemsz Leyster. While the specifics of her education are unknown, contemporaneous Haarlem poet Samuel Ampzing acknowledged her in his work Beschrijvinge ende lof der stadt Haerlem (1628). Some historians believe that after her father's bankruptcy, Leyster sought a profession in painting to assist support her family. She might have learnt to paint from Frans Pietersz de Grebber, who maintained a reputable workshop in Haarlem in the 1620s. During this period, her family relocated to the province of Utrecht, where she may have met members of the Utrecht Caravaggisti.

Most of Leyster's dated works antedate her marriage and are dated between 1629 and 1635. There are just a few known works by her after 1635: two illustrations in a tulip book from 1643, a portrait from 1652, and a still life from 1654. Leyster could have collaborated with her spouse as well. She died in 1660, at the age of 50. She was buried in a farm just outside of Haarlem, and her artwork not on exhibit or acknowledged as hers for close to 200 years. The fact that several of her works were credited to "the wife of Molenaer," rather than Judith Leyster, may have led to the misattribution.
