Kamala Sohonie Bio and Wiki- Indian biochemist Kamala Sohonie was the first Indian woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in a scientific field in 1939. Kamala Sohonie was born on 18 June 1911 in Indore, now in Madhya Pradesh, India. Kamala participated actively in the Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI). She was chosen as the CGSI's President for the years 1982–1983, and she also wrote consumer safety-related articles for the publication's journal, "Keemat."
She opened the route for women to be admitted to the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, for the first time in its history by her admission and work there. Her research focused on the effects of vitamins as well as the nutritional content of pulses, paddy, and other food groups that are consumed by some of the most underprivileged populations in India. The recommendation made by Rajendra Prasad, who was the president at the time, motivated her research on the nutritional advantages of the palm extract known as "Neera." For this effort, Kamala Sohonie was given the Rashtrapati Award.
Kamala Sohonie Education- Kamala earned a BSc in Chemistry and Physics from Bombay University in 1933. At the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), she was the institution's first female student. Dr. Sohonie demonstrated her expertise and was granted permission to conduct her research at IISc. She earned her master's degree in 1936 and published her thesis on this topic. Dr. Sohonie received a research fellowship from Cambridge University in 1937. She carried out the study and found that all plant cells contained the enzyme Cytochrome C, which is essential for the production of energy. She finished her thesis on this topic in just 14 months, earning her Ph.D.
