He was born in Kuala Lumpur after being born on February 8th, 1956 in Pengkalan Balak, Melaka. He attended Methodist Boys School Sentul for all his primary and secondary education. After graduating from college, he began his profession as a painter.He was employed by MacLean & Company, an English animation firm that was at the time making a movie in Malaysia. At the studio, he trained as a scenic artist and worked on the production of Ken Annakin's 1975 film Paper Tiger.
