In 1987, Keeravani started his career as an assistant music director for Telugu composer K. Chakravarthy and Malayalam composer C. Rajamani. In the late 1980s, he worked on films such as Collectorgari Abbayi and Bharathamlo Arjunudu. For nearly a year, he sought the advice of experienced lyricist Veturi at this period.
Keeravani's first major break as an independent artist occurred in 1990 with the film Kalki, however the film was never released, and the soundtrack remained ignored as well. Director Mouli's film Manasu Mamatha, regarded his first released picture, catapulted him to prominence. But it was Ram Gopal Varma's hit film Kshana Kshanam that launched Keeravani as a music director. All of the songs from this film became top chartbusters, and Keeravani was inundated with offers from all across the south Indian film industries. Criminal was his first significant Hindi film.
