Pratap Singh I, also known as Maharana Pratap was a Mewar monarch of the Sisodiya dynasty. Pratap became a folk hero for his guerilla fight against the Mughal Empire's expansionism under Akbar, which inspired other Mughal rebels such as Shivaji to fight against the Mughal rulers.  Maharana Pratap was the son Udai Singh II and Jaiwanta Bai. He also had 3 younger brothers and 2 step-sisters. After the death of King Udai Singh in 1572, Maharana Pratap was chosen as the new king of Mewar as he was the eldest son of Udai Singh. Jagmal Singh one of the younger brothers of Maharana Pratap named wanted revenge against him and joined the Mughal emperor Akbar's army because Pratap was chosen over him for the throne of Mewar. After becoming king of Mewar Maharana Pratap fought many wars and won all of them. The one war for which he is still considered great was the war of Haldighathi which he fought against Mughal ruler Akbar.

Udai Singh II of Mewar and Jaiwanta Bai gave birth to Maharana Pratap. Shakti Singh, Vikram Singh, and Jagmal Singh were his younger brothers. Pratap had two stepsisters, Chand and Man Kanwar. He was married to Bijolia's Ajabde Punwar. He was a member of the Mewar Royal Dynasty. Rani Dheer Bai wanted her son Jagmal to replace Udai Singh after his death in 1572, but top courtiers desired Pratap, the eldest son, to be their monarch. After Udai Singh died in 1572, Prince Pratap came to the throne as Maharana Pratap, the 54th king of Mewar in the Sisodia Rajput family.  Jagmal vowed vengeance and set out for Ajmer to join the army.

Maharana Pratap had 11 wives, 5 daughters, and 17 sons, but his favorite was his first wife, Maharani Ajabde Punwar. In the year 1557, he married her. His first son, Amar Singh, was born in 1559 and eventually succeeded him. It is reported that Maharana Pratap married 10 additional princesses in order to reinforce Rajput unity. Name of his 11 wives is as follows: Ajabde Punwar, Phool Bai Rathore, Amarbai Rathore, Jasobai Chauhan, Alamdebai Chauhan, Champabai Jhati, Lakhabai, Khichar Asha Bai, Solankhinipur Bai. Shahmatibai Hada, and Ratnawatibai Parmar.

Maharana Pratap has a total of 17 sons and 5 daughters. His first son was Amar Singh, who was born in 1559 and later succeeded him as the king of Mewar. Name of his 17 sons is as follows Amar Singh-I, Chanda Singh, Sahas Mal, Shekhar Singh, Bhagwan das, Gopal, Kachara Singh, Sanwal das Singh, Durjan Singh, Kalyan das, Hathi Singh, Puran Mal, Ram Singh, Jaswant Singh, Maal Singh, Natha Singh, and Rainham Singh.

Famous Haldighathi War

In the Battle of Haldighathi on June 18, 1576, Maharana Pratap Singh fought against Akbar's soldiers headed by Man Singh I of Amer. The combat occurred in a tiny mountain pass near Gogunda, today is known as Rajsamand in Rajasthan. Pratap Singh commanded around 3000 cavalry and 400 Bhil archers. Man Singh was the commander of the Mughal army, commanding an army of 5000-10,000 troops. On the first day, Maharana Pratap got injured, he was able to run and hide in the hills and returned to the battle the next day. In the end, the Mughals won the battle of Haldighathi but they were not able to cause any harm to Maharana Pratap and his close ones which makes their victory meaningless.

Maharana Pratap died on January 15th, 1597 at Chavand. Maharana died due to Injuries he got when he was hunting a tiger. He was succeeded by his first son Amar Singh I and before dying, Maharana Pratap told his son to win Chittor back and never surrender to the Mughals.
