Gopala Ratnam, was a Venus Pictures distributor, and his uncle, "Venus" Krishnamurthy, was a film producer. G. Venkateswaran, Mani's elder brother, would go on to produce some of his films. G. Srinivasan is his younger brother, and he, like Venkateswaran, would co-produce several of his films. Mani Ratnam was born in Madras (now Chennai) and grew up with his brothers and relatives.
