His mother, Anna Werzberg, was born in Yabluniv, Ukraine. He was a relative of Israeli singer Yardena Arazi through his mother's family. The family relocated to Lille when Marcel was four years old, but they eventually returned to Strasbourg.

Once Nazi Germany invaded France, Marcel, aged 17, escaped to Limoges with his family. His cousin Georges Loinger, a member of the French Jewish Resistance in France (Organization Juive de Combat-OJC, aka Armée Juive), persuaded him to join the French Jewish Resistance in France to assist in the rescue of Jews during the Holocaust.
