Early Life: - Martha Karua was born on September 22, 1957, in Kirinyaga District, Central Province, Kenya, to Jackson Karua and Josephine Wanjiru. She grew up in the hamlet of Kimunye in the as the second of eight children, four girls and four boys.
Professional Career: - Karua was a member of the opposition political movements that successfully campaigned for the restoration of multi-party democracy in Kenya in the early 1990s. Kenya was under the authoritarian authority of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), the country's only legally recognized political party, which was led by President Daniel arap Moi at the time.
Karua became a member of Kenneth Matiba's Ford-Asili party. In September 1992, she stepped out of the party leadership elections, which she saw as rigged, allowing her single opponent, Geoffrrey Karekia Kariithi, to be proclaimed the winner. She joined the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), where she won the Party nominations/ticket in November 1992, and then went on to win the election as Gichuhi MP in December 1992, defeating incumbent Geoffrey Karekia Kariithi, liberating Gichugu people from the Kareithi - Nahashon Njuno feud. Karua was elected as the MP for the Gichugu seat and the first woman lawyer to be elected to Parliament by popular vote. In 1993, she was chosen as the Democratic Party's legal affairs secretary.
