They grew raised in Houston, Texas, and Matthew began running track at River Oaks Baptist School. They then enrolled at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory. Matthew began competing in the high jump before shifting his attention to the long jump and the 400m. Boling ran the opening leg for the USA's 4 400 m relay team, which won silver in the final at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships.
