Early Career

His career in politics started in his teenage years, while he and some pals founded the DMK Gopalapuram Youth Wing at a tea shop. In the 1967 elections, he was 14 years old and campaigned for his uncle, Murasoli Maran. Stalin was elected to the DMK's General Committee in 1973. He rose to prominence after being imprisoned at Madras Central Prison under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) in 1976 for protesting against the Emergency. He was beaten up in detention, and another DMK prisoner, C. Chittibabu, died as a result of injuries and police abuse while guarding him. While incarcerated, he completed his final year BA exams.
