Career: - Nalini Sriharan, the lone surviving member of the five-man assassination team, has been serving a life sentence in Vellore Central Prison for the past 30 years. Raji Gandhi was slain by a female suicide bomber named Dhanu on the night of May 21, 1991, while campaigning for the then-upcoming elections in the southern states. When the suicide bomber arrived at a campaign rally in Sriperumbudur, he was met and hailed by a member of Sri Lanka's terrorist organization, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). She then knelt to touch his feet and detonated the explosive-laden belt she was wearing.
Nalini was the only survivor of the assassination squad's five members. Her involvement in the crime was revealed thanks to photographs taken by S Haribabu, a local photojournalist who was also killed in the blast. Nalini was a close aide to an LTTE operative and convict in the crime, Murugan, who was captured a month after the assassination and sentenced to death.
