He was an Indian ghazal and playback singer best known for his contributions to Hindi film and Indian mainstream music. He began his career in 1980 with the publication of a ghazal album named Aahat and went on to record several songs such as Mukarar in 1981, Tarrannum in 1982, Mehfil in 1983, Pankaj Udhas Live at Royal Albert Hall in 1984, Nayaab in 1985, and Aafreen in 1986.

Following his fame as a ghazal singer, he was requested to act and sing in Mahesh Bhatt's film, Naam. Udhas rose to prominence after singing in the 1986 film Naam, where his song "Chitthi Aayee Hai" (The Letter Has Arrived) became an immediate success.
