Early Life: - Paulo Coelho grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and went to a Jesuit school. Coelho's parents sent him to a mental institution when he was 17 years old, and he escaped three times until being freed at the age of 20. Later, Coelho stated that "They didn't mean to injure me, but they didn't know what to do. They did not do it to ruin me; rather, they did it to rescue me." Coelho went in law school against his parents' wishes, abandoning his aspiration of becoming a writer. He dropped out a year later and became a hippy, traveling around South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe, and began taking drugs in the 1960s.

He started writing that day after seeing one in a shop window. He eventually found a larger publishing business, and The Alchemist took off with the release of his second novel, Brida. In 1994, HarperCollins chose to publish the book.
