His father worked at TMH Hospital in Jamshedpur as a laborer for a steel company. In 1977, Das joined Bharatiya Janata Party. He became a founder member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980. In 1995, he was selected from Jamshedpur East to serve as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. On August 16, 2014, he was also named vice president of the BJP National Committee.

Das has held the position of Jharkhand's sixth chief minister. On December 28, 2014, he took office as Jharkhand's sixth chief minister. During the BJP-led government in the state, he also held the positions of Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Urban Development. Under his leadership, the BJP was only able to defeat the JMM alliance in 25 of the 81 assembly seats in the December 2019 Jharkhand Legislative Assembly elections, forcing them to quit.
