Sam Manekshaw Wiki and Bio: - Sam Manekshaw was the first Indian Army commander to be raised to the rank of field marshal and served as Chief of Army Staff during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. Sam Manekshaw was born in Amritsar, Punjab on 3 April 1914. In 1932, Manekshaw joined the Indian Military Academy's first class in Dehradun. He was sent to the 8th Gorkha Rifles in 1947 after India was divided into two nations.
Manekshaw never led an infantry unit since he was assigned to a planning duty during the 1947 Indo-Pakistani War and the Hyderabad Crisis. He was named General Officer Commanding the 26th Infantry Division after finishing the Imperial Defence College's higher leadership course. In addition, he oversaw the Defense Services Staff College as its commandant. After receiving a promotion to army commander in 1963, Manekshaw assumed leadership of the Western leadership before moving to the Eastern Command in 1964.
Manekshaw was scheduled to retire in June 1972, but his tenure was extended by six months. On January 1, 1973, he was upgraded to the rank of field marshal "in recognition of outstanding services to the Armed Forces and the nation." The second and third highest civilian honors in India, the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan were given to him, respectively.
Sam Manekshaw Death: - Manekshaw passed away in the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu at the age of 94 on June 27, 2008, at 12:30 a.m. due to complications from pneumonia. His final words were reportedly, "I'm okay!" Every year on December 16th, people celebrate Vijay Diwas to remember the triumph that was attained in 1971 under Manekshaw's leadership.
