He has worked in both public and private government for more than 37 years. He has held positions as the Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Tourism Development Corporate (ITDC), a Public Sector Unit under the Government of India, and APCO, a State Cooperative Company.
He successfully designed and carried out a turnaround plan in the APCO, concentrating on the elements that are now known as the Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework. Sharma was supposed to retire on November 30, 2021, when he was first appointed chief secretary on October 10 of last year.A six-month extension was granted to the 1985 batch IAS officer, running from December 1 to May 31, 2022. At the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, he serves as both CEO and Director General.
