It was also found in the investigation that after negotiations, the deal was finalized for Rs 18 crore, in which Rs 50 lakh was taken as a token amount.
Based on this investigation, the CBI has registered an FIR against the members of the NCB team, including its former Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede. The SET probe also revealed that the independent witness, who allegedly demanded Rs 25 crore from KP Gosavi, was made to look like an NCB officer, and that the Wankhede-led team allegedly had Cordelia raided. The names of 17 people were cleared as suspects during the course of the investigation.
On Monday, a CBI spokesperson said: “We had registered an FIR on May 11 against the then Zonal Director of NCB (Mumbai Zone Unit) Sameer Wankhede; Vishwa Vijay Singh, the then Superintendent (NCB); Ashish Ranjan Prasad, the then intelligence officer of the Mumbai Zonal Unit (NCB); K P Gosavi and Sanvil D'Souza (alleged witnesses) and other unknown persons. On 12 May, the CBI conducted searches at 29 locations in Mumbai, Delhi, Ranchi, Lucknow, Chennai, and Guwahati, which led to the recovery of incriminating material.
Wankhede, a 2008 batch IRS officer who headed the NCB Mumbai zone, led a team of officers to raid a ship off the Mumbai coast on the night of October 2, 2021. NCB claimed to have seized 13 grams of cocaine. In the raid, 5 grams of mephedrone, 21 grams of Ganja, 22 tablets of MDMA, and Rs 1.33 lakh in cash were recovered and 17 people including Aryan were arrested. The CBI had registered an FIR after receiving a complaint from a person named Superintendent Kapil in the Vigilance Branch of NCB. "A SET constituted to probe the allegations of improper/dishonest performance of duty by certain officers of NCB, Mumbai zone for obtaining undue benefit from the suspects in the matter was registered and probed under the supervision of Wankhede, CBI stated in the FIR.
