Early Life: - Hannity was the son of Lillian and Hugh Hannity and was born in New York City, New York. Hugh was a World War II soldier and family-court officer, while Lillian worked as a stenographer and prison officer at a county jail. He was the only boy and the youngest of four siblings. All of his grandparents came to America from Ireland. He grew up on Long Island in Franklin Square, New York. In his childhood, Hannity worked as a paperboy, delivering New York Daily News and Long Island Daily Press publications. His parents were initially supporters of President John F. Kennedy, ultimately shifting to Republican beliefs as time passed, but they avoided being overly political at home.
Professional Career: - Hannity began painting houses in 1982 and eventually worked as a construction contractor in Santa Barbara, California. While working as a general contractor, he aired his first talk radio show in 1989 at UC Santa Barbara's volunteer campus station, KCSB-FM. The performance was shown for 40 hours. Regarding his first performance, he stated, "I was terrible at it. I was a disaster."
After less than a year, Hannity's weekly show on KCSB was cancelled due to a scandal. Gay and lesbian rights were discussed in a heated manner during two episodes. After a campaign on Hannity's behalf by the Santa Barbara chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union claimed that the station had discriminated against Hannity's First Amendment rights, the university board that oversaw the station overturned its decision.
