Early Career: - Ramanujan (literally, "younger brother of Rama," a Hindu god) was born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Mysore Kingdom (now Tamil Nadu, India), into a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family. His father, Kuppuswamy Srinivasa Iyengar, was a clerk in a sari business from Thanjavur district. Komalatammal, his mother, was a homemaker who sang at a nearby temple. They resided on Sarangapani Sannidhi Street in Kumbakonam in a tiny traditional house. The family house has been turned into a museum. Ramanujan's mother gave birth to a boy, Sadagopan, when he was a year and a half old; Sadagopan died less than three months later.

Professional Career: - Ramanujan met V. Ramaswamy Aiyer, the deputy collector who started the Indian Mathematical Society, in 1910. Ramanujan displayed his mathematical notebooks to Aiyer, who worked in the tax department. According to Aiyer, "I was struck by the amazing mathematical discoveries contained there."
