The Fathers of the French Foreign Mission founded St Joseph's College in Bangalore in 1882. With a history of more than 135 years, it is one of the oldest colleges in the state of Karnataka. The University Grants Commission has designated it as a College of Excellence. At the undergraduate level, St Joseph's College in Bangalore offers a BA degree in ten specialisations, a B.Sc. degree in eleven specialisations, a B.Com, a BCA, a B.Voc. in two specialisations, and a Bachelor of Social Work degree.

To be eligible to apply for UG programme, candidates must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent exam from a recognised board. To be eligible to apply for the postgraduate degree and diploma programmes, candidates must have a graduation/bachelors degree in the relevant subject(s) or an equivalent qualification with a minimum aggregate of 50% or equivalent CGPA from any recognised University/College/Institute.
