The Kashmir Files Wiki: - Vivek Agnihotri's The Kashmir Files is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by him. The film, produced by Zee Studios, is based on the evacuation of Kashmiri Pandits during the Kashmir uprising, which it depicts as genocide through a fictitious scenario. Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, and Mithun Chakraborty, and Chinmay Mandlekar star. The film was released in theatres on March 11, 2022.
The governing Bharatiya Janata Party-approved, promoted, and granted tax-free status to the film in many states, resulting in large audiences and economic success. The film's critical reaction has been mixed; the photography and performances of the cast have been praised as riveting, but it has been accused of historical revisionism and of being propaganda associated with the governing party, aimed at instilling prejudice towards Muslims. Circa 1989–1990
In 1989–90 Kashmir, Islamic militants stormed the valley and expelled Kashmiri Hindu Pandits under the banners Raliv Galiv ya Chaliv ("convert (to Islam), leave or die") and Mustafa Batte Safa ("with God's help, the whole Kashmiri Pandit population will depart valley"). Pushkar Nath Pandit, a teacher, is concerned for the safety of his son Karan, who the militants accused of being an Indian spy. Pushkar asks his government servant buddy Brahma Dutt to look after Karan. Brahma travels to Kashmir with Pushkar and observes the hardship of Kashmiri Pandits as well as violence against them. He raises the issue with the chief minister of J&K, who suspends Brahma.
In 2020
Pushkar raises Sharda's younger son Krishna in the current day. He believes his parents perished in a car accident. Krishna, an ANU student, is influenced by Professor Radhika Menon, a proponent of the Kashmiri secession. Pushkar's friends Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, and police officer Hari Narain, who had served in Kashmir when Karan was slain, describe the events of Kashmir as "genocide," according to Brahma.
BJP-affiliated Hindu Right extremists were observed chanting chants calling for violence against Kashmiri Muslims and Indian Muslims in general in the theatres. In one case, a "Shoot the traitors" (Desh ke gaddaro ko goli maro salon ko) slogan was heard, giving the impression that it was a spontaneous outburst, however it was reportedly raised by members of the Hindu Jagran Manch, a Sangh Parivar member. In Jammu, a Kashmiri Pandit activist and his family were heckled by a crowd of BJP members because he had called the video exploitative of the Pandit community.
