There will be a minute of silence for the five-year-old who passed away on Tuesday in the Moncton hockey association

Millions of Canadians look forward to the Saturday morning hockey game each week. But one game in Moncton, New Brunswick, was different. Before the puck fell, there was a minute of silence for Tate Hughes, a five-year-old who died unexpectedly on Tuesday. Tate's U-7 Blue Jays and his elder brother's U-11 Hawks stood together on the blue line, united in their sorrow.

I don't handle these situations well. When the kids came out, I had a terrible time holding it together - another difficult time for me and I'm sure everyone else in the arena, said Abbass. Lindsey Steeves, a Hughes family friend and neighbor, was moved by the pre-game ceremony.

It simply showed how the hockey community came together for Tate and his legacy, as well as to support the family, said Steeves. Tate's cause of death is unknown, but the impression he made on everyone around him in his brief life was evident at the arena.

Jeremy Nash, his coach, stated that he enjoyed being around his big brother's squad. He followed them everywhere they went. They were his family in the same way that his family was his family. They accepted him. He'd hand out high fives. Nash described him as "their little mascot, their little buddy." Nash, whose son and daughter participate on the squad, said the team's first practice without Tate was difficult for everyone.

We distributed our stickers and blue-taped all of our sticks for Tate. We told them Tate adored his team. He adored his teammates, and we just told them that it was a day to have fun playing hockey, said Nash.

Hockey associations from all around the province have come together to express their support and raise funds for the family.

The response has been incredible across the province. Teams from Edmundston, Hampton, and Saint John are participating in 50/50 draws. It's a very humbling experience, according to Abbass. We began receiving calls from individuals who didn't know him as soon as the news broke. It's just one of those things that attracts everyone.

Tate was described in his obituary as a "little ray of sunshine" who took great satisfaction in being everyone's "little dude." Visitation is set for Monday, followed by a private family burial later that day. By Saturday evening, more than $50,000 of the $10,000 objective had been met.

The Hawks will observe a minute of silence before the game on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. at Moncton's Superior Propane Centre, Rink A, according to McGillis. They anticipate a large audience, which will include Tate's teammates, who will wear jerseys and join the Hawks on the ice.
