Walt Whitman Career

Early Career: - Walter Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, in West Hills, Town of Huntington, Long Island, to Quaker parents, Walter (1789–1855) and Louisa Van Velsor Whitman (1795–1873). As the second of nine children, he was quickly dubbed "Walt" to distinguish himself from his father. Three of Whitman Srseven .'s boys were named after American leaders: Andrew Jackson, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. Jesse was the oldest, while another son died unidentified at the age of six months. Edward was the name of the couple's sixth and youngest son. Whitman relocated with his family from West Hills to Brooklyn when he was four years old, residing in a variety of residences owing, in part, to failed investments.

Professional Career: - Whitman worked for another printer, Erastus Worthington, in Brooklyn the next summer. In the spring, his family returned to West Hills, but Whitman stayed and obtained a position at the shop of Alden Spooner, the editor of the prominent Whig weekly newspaper, the Long-Island Star. Whitman began attending theatrical performances while at the Star, became a regular client of the local library, joined a town debating society, and anonymously published some of his early poems in the New-York Mirror. Whitman departed the Star and Brooklyn at the age of 16 in May 1835. Whitman relocated to New York City to work as a compositor, but he couldn't recall where in later years.
