He joined the Colts' professional staff after graduating from SMU in 1982. In 1984, one month after the Colts relocated from Baltimore to Indianapolis, he was named vice president and general manager.

After his father had a stroke in 1995, Jim took over as senior executive vice president, general manager, and chief operating officer in April 1996. When his father died in 1997, Jim participated in a court struggle with his stepmother over ownership of the franchise, but he eventually became the NFL's youngest owner at the time, at 37.
