He was one of the most acclaimed directors to emerge from a wave of talented filmmakers who made their mark in the 1970s. Friedkin made a name for himself after producing two of the biggest box-office hits of the 1970s; "The French Connection" and "The Exorcist the French Connection" won him five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Screenplay and Film Editing, and won him Best Director. Released in 1973, The Exorcist horrified and mesmerized audiences with its tale of a 12-year-old girl possessed by the devil. He was the son of Rachel (née Greene) and Louis Friedkin.
