Zhang served as the first Ernest S. Kuh Endowed chair professor at the University of California, Berkeley in the United States, the director of the materials science division of the National Science Foundation, and a senior faculty member at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Xiang Zhang Career:- Before entering UC Berkeley, he held the positions of assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University from 1996 to 1999, associate professor from 1999 to 2004, and full professor from 2004 to 2014. Zhang is an elected member of the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and The International Society for Optical Engineering. He is also a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academia Sinica.
Zhang authored around 390 journal articles. His work focuses on the physics of materials, metamaterials, and nanophotonics. Zhang was appointed president and vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong on December 15. It was the first time a candidate who was born and received their undergraduate education on Chinese mainland had been selected for such a position. He began serving in July 2018.
