Early Life & Career: - Tanev spent three seasons in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL). In his first season with the Durham Fury in 2006-07, he had no goals and nine assists in 40 games. In 2009-10, he played for the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tigers of the Atlantic Hockey Conference in NCAA Division I.

Tanev was scouted during the NCAA tournament by Vancouver Canucks director of player development Dave Gagner, who had previously known Tanev as his youth roller hockey coach. Tanev signed a four-year, $18 million contract with the Calgary Flames on October 9, 2020, after leaving the Canucks as free agency after ten seasons.
