Essra Mohawk News:- Essra Mohawk, 75, formerly of Philadelphia, died Monday, Dec. 11, of cancer at her Nashville home. She was an eclectic singer-songwriter who created a hit for Cyndi Lauper, published more than a dozen albums, and was often likened to Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Laura Nyro.

Ms. Mohawk, a self-described "flower child," learned to sing, write songs, and play the piano as a little girl in West and Northeast Philadelphia in the 1960s. She went on to have a colorful career, with her song "Change of Heart," sung by Lauper, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1987. A decade earlier, in 1977, her 1970 album Primordial Lovers was named one of the top 25 albums of all time by a Rolling Stone magazine writer. Her best-known songs are "Sufferin' Til Suffrage" and "Interjections!" from Schoolhouse Rock! "Change of Heart" by Cyndi Lauper, and "Stronger Than the Wind" by Tina Turner. Her second album, Primordial Lovers, received critical praise.

Her first release, under the name Jamie Carter, was the song "The Boy with the Way," followed by "The Memory of Your Voice," on Liberty Records in 1964. Shadow Morton found her as Sandy Hurvitz and put her tunes with both the Shangri-Las ("I'll Never Learn") and the Vanilla Fudge ("The Spell That Comes After").

In 1967, while residing in New York City, she met Frank Zappa, who convinced her to perform briefly with The Mothers of Invention before signing her to his Bizarre Records production firm. After discovering that a groupie (and Whisky a Go Go secretary) he had slept with, Gail Zappa (then Gail Sloatman), whom he had slept with, was pregnant, he quit the project and entrusted it to woodwind player and keyboardist Ian Underwood. Zappa left the project after Hurvitz, whom he had been dating on the side, pushed him to marry Sloatman.
